Compare Yorkies and Biewers
YORKIES
The Yorkshire Terrier, also known as a Yorkie, is a British breed of toy dog of terrier type. It is among the smallest of the terriers and indeed of all dog breeds. Originally bred to hunt rodents on ships and in mines. They were gradually bred smaller to be lap and companion dogs. Rest assured, many have not forgotten their roots.
They generally have an affectionate yet feisty temperament. They love to snuggle, but can also be very active and spirited.
Yorkshire Terriers have a long, silky coat that continues to grow, much like human hair. This means that while Yorkies don’t shed as much as other breeds, they do require a high level of grooming. Either with regular brushing, or trips to the groomers.
BIEWERS
The Biewer (pronounced Beaver, in German) Terrier is a toy dog of German descent that is the result of two Yorkshire Terriers with a recessive piebald gene breeding. Recognized by the AKC in 2021, and the CKC in 2022.
The Biewer Terrier temperament is often described as lively, silly, and devoted. Their purpose? To be loved!
And, just like their Yorkie ancestors, Biewer Terriers require grooming care.
All Biewers have a tricolor coat in one of three color combinations:
Chocolate, tan, and white
Black, tan, and white
Blue, tan, and white
So you ask, "WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?"
Coloring is the first thing people notice: Whereas Yorkies are black (turning silver) and tan, Biewer Terriers are tri-colored, adding white to the mix. Their coat is primarily black-and-white, with tan highlights called “Points” around their ears and face.
Each of these breeds have their charms. Both are full of personality, both are intelligent.
Why BOTH breeds? Why MIX?
That is a very good question. Remember the Almond Joy ad? “Sometimes you feel like a nut! Sometimes you don’t!” That is why I mix these amazing little marvels! Quirky, silly, attentive it is just the best of both worlds! In my lapdog loving opinion.
